What are the advantages of vegan jackets compared with down and leather?

A vegan jacket contains no animal-derived materials: no real down, no fur and no leather. Its synthetic insulation provides reliable warmth even when damp and dries faster than down. And unlike a leather jacket, it comes with winter-ready insulation built in. The question of where the materials come from is answered before you even have to ask.

First things first: this isn’t going to be a lecture. Down is a proven insulation material, and a leather jacket is a classic. This article takes a straightforward look at what makes a vegan jacket different in everyday life, when it comes to animal welfare, warmth and care. What you make of that is up to you.

What makes a vegan jacket different from a conventional one?

When it comes to jackets, vegan means no animal-derived materials, from the insulation and lining to the trim on the hood. Conventional winter jackets often contain animal-based materials in places you might not notice at first: down in the insulation, leather on patches and details, and sometimes real fur around the edge of the hood.

A vegan jacket replaces all of these materials: synthetic insulation provides the warmth, faux fur creates the look, and coated textiles provide protection from the weather. From the outside, you usually can’t see the difference. That’s exactly the point.

Why does the origin of animal-derived materials matter?

You can’t tell how down was sourced by looking at the finished jacket, and the same applies to fur. If you want to be certain, you either have to trust the supply chain or choose materials where the question doesn’t arise in the first place. A vegan jacket takes the second approach.

That has been our approach since 2014: all three of our brands are 100% vegan, with no real down, no fur and no animal-derived materials. We participate in the Fur Free Retailer Program, run by the Fur Free Alliance and represented in Germany by FOUR PAWS. It is a clear commitment against animal suffering in fashion. That’s the ethical side of it. The rest comes down to the materials themselves.

Is a vegan jacket just as warm as a down jacket?

What keeps you warm is trapped air, and synthetic insulation works on the same principle as down by creating pockets of air that retain heat. The difference becomes clear in wet conditions: synthetic insulation continues to provide reliable insulation when damp, while down can lose much of its insulating performance when wet. In cold, wet German winters, that is often more the rule than the exception from November to February.

There is also the range of warmth levels. Our synthetic insulation comes in several options, from lightweight transitional jackets to models designed for days below -5°C. You can find out how to choose the right level in our article about down-free winter jackets.

How does a leather jacket perform in winter?

The leather jacket is a classic for the transitional seasons. Leather offers good protection from the wind, but provides very little insulation on its own. Without a thick lining, it can quickly become uncomfortable on cold days. Leather also requires regular care and does not handle wet conditions particularly well.

A padded vegan jacket takes a different approach: the insulation provides the warmth, while keeping the jacket lightweight and easy to care for at home. And if you like the look of a fur-trimmed collar, what looks like fur on our jackets is high-quality synthetic faux fur.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vegan Jackets

What are the advantages of a vegan jacket?

A vegan jacket contains no animal-derived materials: no real down, no fur and no leather. Its synthetic insulation provides reliable warmth even when damp and dries faster than down. And unlike a leather jacket, it comes with winter-ready insulation built in. The question of where the materials come from is answered before you even have to ask.

Is a vegan winter jacket as warm as a down jacket?

Modern synthetic insulation retains warmth through many small air pockets and is available in different warmth levels, from lightweight transitional jackets to models designed for days below -5°C. It also provides reliable insulation when damp and dries faster than down.

How can you tell whether a jacket is vegan?

Check the label and the material information: there should be no down, real fur or leather, including in the lining, insulation and trim. With us, it’s clearly stated: 100% vegan, from the very beginning.

Is a leather jacket warm enough for winter?

Leather provides protection from the wind but offers very little insulation on its own. Without a thick insulated lining, a leather jacket is better suited to the transitional seasons. For cold days, a padded jacket with insulating filling is the better choice.

How do you care for a vegan jacket?

In most cases, a gentle wash cycle at 30°C with liquid detergent for delicate fabrics is enough. Avoid fabric softener, as it can cause the insulation to clump together. Always follow the care label on your jacket.

How durable is a vegan jacket?

Durability depends more on construction and care than on the material itself. Leather can last a very long time when properly cared for, and a well-made vegan jacket can also accompany you through many winters. The best jacket is the one you’re still wearing three years from now.
